About diamond origin
Nuage Jewels sells exclusive jewelry of conflict-free ethical natural triple excellent cut diamonds from Botswana with certificates of origin.
At the time of Botswana's independence in 1966, there were only 12 km of paved road, a few hospitals, and most residents depended on livestock and agriculture for their income. Five decades later, Botswana has transformed into one of the fastest growing economies on the African continent.
For 50 years, Botswana's diamonds have changed the country's economy in a very positive direction. Hundreds of thousands of lives in Botswana have been touched by the income from the diamond industry which accounts for a significant proportion of the GDP, income which has been used for the betterment of the nation. It is a powerful story and a legacy of how diamonds do good when managed properly.
"For our people every diamond purchase represents food on the table, better living conditions, better healthcare, potable and safe drinking water, and more roads to connect our remote communities" - Festus Mogae, former president of Botswana.
Botswana is globally recognized as one of the world's largest producers of gem quality mined diamonds. Diamonds from Botswana account for approximately 40% of all diamonds in the world. Our supplier has a strict due diligence chain that ensures that purchased diamonds have been mined under strict environmental and work environment standards. The diamonds begin their journey as rough diamonds mined in Botswana by ISO and OHSAS certified mining operations with best international environmental management practices. The mining operations actively ensure that they meet and exceed international and local environmental regulations. Furthermore, they are very committed to minimizing any negative effects diamond mining can have on the environment. They actively promote a culture of environmental responsibility and commitment to sustainable development in Botswana.
Through site visits, in its supplier inspection, our diamond supplier confirms the extensive environmental work of the mining operations. Nature conservation is a cornerstone of the mining operation, this has resulted in two game parks of 29,885 hectares being established around the two main mines. These parks provide an important refuge for the wild animals in areas where they would otherwise have been forced out by cattle ranching and poaching.
After the diamonds are mined in Botswana, they are sent to BPP certified studios in India or Botswana to be cut, polished and to bring out the beauty of each diamond with incredible precision and artistry.
The Best Practice Principles (BPP) are a set of social and environmental standards for the diamond industry. The BPP provides a strong system for assuring stakeholders, shareholders, customers and business partners that a company conducts its business in a responsible manner. Companies seeking to become BPP certified must participate in its rigorous certification process that includes independent third-party audits.
